He obtained his doctorate at Charles University, Prague, Faculty of Law, in 1978. From 1979 to 1985 he worked as an in-house counsel in a foreign trade company where he specialized in business and copyright law. From 1985 to 1990 he worked as an in-house counsel of the Czech State Insurance Company, focusing on insurance, commercial and civil law. He was appointed as a Secretary to the national section of AIDA in 1988. Josef Vejmelka is a member of the Czech Bar Association and IBA. In 1990 he began to work in the Prague office of Heller Löber Bahn & Partner, which he led. He continued to practise there during the period 1998 to 2000 in which the firm became a branch of Bruckhaus Westrick Heller Löber, and from 2000 to 2002, when the firm formed part of the network of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. In 2002, together with Petr Wünsch, he took over the Prague office of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and established an unlimited partnership of lawyers called Vejmelka & Wünsch, v.o.s. (now s.r.o.). He participated as a speaker at several international seminars and conferences. He is fluent in Czech, Slovak, English, German and Russian. He is a co-author of the publication Czechoslovakian Business Law and the author of various legal articles about, among other things, foreign investments, including incentive programmes in the Czech Republic, competition issues related to merger notification regimes, copyright and insurance contracts. Presently, he specializes in commercial law, M&A, competition law and real estate law.
